Academic Essay Formats

There are numerous numbers of formats that are deployed to write essays. The choice for these formats depends on the field that you are crafting your articles from or the instructions that have been given by your professor. The forms include; Harvard, Vancouver, APA, and MLA. These formats have well been described in EssayWritingSolutions. However, the most applied format of writing essays is the APA and MLA styles of writing. Each format has rules to consider while crafting it. Therefore, it is essential to cover the most basic and most used format.

Some formats of editing cut across the APA and MLA styles. For instance, in both APA and MLA the font that is used should be Times New Roman, 12 points and your work should be double-spaced. There should be a page that shows where you have outsourced your information. In both the APA and MLA formats, the page is found after the conclusion of the main body on a new page. In APA this page is known as the "Reference" page if there’s only one citation but “References” if there are more than one sources for your work. However, in MLA the page is known as the “Work Cited” page if there’s only one citation but “Works Cited” if there are more than one sources for your work.

Moreover, there should be in-text citations for your work. In MLA, the author name and page number are included in the in-text citation. It should be before the full stop abbreviation and after the quotes. The quotes are used to lift the exact words that are to be used in the essay. For instance, "stress can bring about mental disorder" (Austin 126). If some words have been lifted but contain some grammatical errors, the word sic is used. This word tells the reader that the word was exactly lifted from the text that was referenced but had a grammatical error. For instance, “…for most poets writing [sic] is a valuable way of expressing their personality” (Aurelia 34).

Moreover, if the authors that had written the work are more than two, we use the word "et al." However, if the authors are two, we state the two names with an ampersand at the middle. For example, if the authors are two - (John & James 328). If there are more than two authors (Danny et al. 146)

MLA and APA formats are particularly popular with professors. It is therefore imperative that a student in college gets to know these two formats. Also, since the font type and font number is consistent in both the two formats, it is wise to set your defaults as Times New Roman, 12, double-spaced under the Home tab in Microsoft Word. It doesn’t matter the version you are using whether 2010, 2013 or even 2016.  They are all compatible. It is also essential that you get to be conversant with Microsoft Word to be able to get through it with ease while writing your essays. However, if you are unable to work your way through you can always source help from writing services online.
